BASc(GHD) students Carey Chan, Adina Pang, and Harseni Hewavitarne are undertaking their placement at IFRC in Geneva. Recently, they had the wonderful opportunity to meet with Professor Gabriel Leung, Executive Director (Charities and Community) of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and former Director of School of Public Health and Dean of Medicine at HKU. Professor Leung was delighted with seeing our students in Geneva and hosted a coffee chat where he shared insights and encouragement.

BASc(GHD) alumna Andrea Chan came back to HKU on Monday (Sept 22) to share her experience working in GX Foundation's overseas health projects, along with other current students who had their placements at the non-governmental organisation.

The HKUMed event also featured a talk on Compassion in Medicine and Humanitarian Assistance delivered by Mr Leung Chun-ying, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). Mr Leung is also the Chairman of GX Foundation.

During a visit to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) headquarter in Geneva, Professor Chung had the lovely chance to catch up with Adina, Carey and Harseni, BASc(GHD) students who are having their placement over there. They met at Boky restaurant, a place Professor Chung often dined while working for Professor Keiji Fukuda in WHO some years ago.

On 26 August, we had the honour to have invited Professor Sophia Chan, former Secretary for Food and Health, to share her journey and insights from her time in government. Professor Chan offered invaluable advice to BASc(GHD) alumni in public service careers at the Primary Healthcare Commission and the Social Welfare Department, and current students interning at the Centre for Health Protection.

This achievement marks the second consecutive year of record-breaking, following its rise to 17th globally in 2025. Yesterday, we were thrilled to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our 22 Year 4 students returning from their placements at the Post-Placement Presentation! This special event brought together not only our GHD students from all cohorts but also esteemed teachers, alumni, family, and friends.

The presentation was an enlightening experience, with students sharing their insights, learnings, and the impactful work they accomplished during their placements. Our students had the opportunity to work in various international organizations, including but not limited to UNICEF in New York, IFRC in Geneva, China CDC in Beijing and Shanghai, and UNDP in São Tomé and Príncipe, located in more than ten cities worldwide. Through their presentations, the students showcased their job duties, unique encounters with new cities and cultures, and the resilience displayed when faced with tough challenges. The faculty members were thoroughly impressed by the students' dedication and the positive contributions they made in their respective fields.

We are incredibly proud of our students for their hard work and resilience. The knowledge and skills they've gained will undoubtedly enrich their future endeavors. A big thank you to Prof. David Bishai, Prof. Pui Hong Chung, and Dr. Andrew Park for their guidance and support throughout this journey.

Winki Cheung, a fourth-year GHD student who recently completed her placement at the China CDC in Beijing. Here’s a glimpse into her valuable experience:

Projects Involved:

1. Global Health Capacity Building: Winki contributed to the development of a curriculum for a global health program, starting in China and potentially extending to Africa. This component emphasizes adaptive learning through simulations and case studies to equip future health professionals with the necessary skills.

2. Malaria Gene Sequencing Courses Platform: With a focus on Africa, Winki reviewed and provided feedback on course content aimed at enhancing the practical ability of public health laboratory staff to conduct malaria molecular surveillance and gene sequencing.

Winki's work aims to train the next generation in the global health field, expanding the global health workforce within China and beyond.

Exploring Heritage: Being based in Beijing allowed Winki to delve into the city's rich history by visiting various monuments and museums. Some notable sites include the Imperial College Museum, the Temple of Heaven, and the Yuanmingyuan (Old Summer Palace).

Samantha Choi, another fourth-year GHD student, is currently on placement at the China CDC in Shanghai.

In mid-October, Samantha and her team traveled to Yueyang, Hunan, to conduct a field inquiry into the prevention and control of schistosomiasis—a disease that has plagued China for over 2,100 years. China aims to eliminate the disease in all endemic areas by 2030.

Day 1: The team visited the Museum of Schistosomiasis Prevention and Control of Hunan Province, learning about efforts since 1953 to control the disease. As of 2023, 22 of the 40 endemic counties in Hunan have met the elimination standards.

Day 2: The team visited rural villages to observe screening tests for elderly residents. Samantha had enlightening conversations, gaining insights into their concerns about schistosomiasis and the broader social issues related to the aging population.

On-Site Investigation: The team conducted an on-site investigation in an endemic area, learning to distinguish Oncomelania snails, the common intermediate host of schistosomiasis. Despite the physical challenges, Samantha felt profound gratitude for the frontline workers.

Key Takeaways: Samantha observed remarkable progress in combating schistosomiasis but noted the dwindling funding for research. She emphasizes the need for sustained investment and global collaboration to continue making strides in public health.

Samantha's journey in Yueyang deepened her understanding of public health challenges and the essential role of collaboration. She is eager to contribute to global health initiatives and ensure health equity for all.

Yixuan Huang, another fourth-year GHD student, is currently on placement at the World Wild Life (WWF) in Hong Kong.

Yixuan focused on the Low Carbon Manufacturing Program (LCMP), where she designed questionnaires, conducted interviews with senior executives, wrote reports, and created informative posters. Her most memorable moment was conducting her first interview with Greenland, where she overcame initial nervousness with the support of her supervisors and teammates. This experience was a significant personal achievement for her.

Cain Lau, another fourth-year GHD student, is currently on placement at the University of Hong Kong-China Medical Board-National Institute of Public Health Project in Phnom Penh.

From day one, Cain was immersed in the heart of public health policy and research in Cambodia. With the new administration aiming for universal health coverage by 2035, Cain’s primary task involved analyzing the new Universal Health Care (UHC) Roadmap 2024-2035, identifying how the Ministry of Health and NIPH can contribute effectively and bridge capacity gaps.

The trust placed in interns at NIPH was remarkable. Cain had the opportunity to draft a grant proposal for vaccine uptake research, competing against teams from over 15 countries. This experience highlighted the high-stakes nature of global health work, beyond the academic setting.
Cain also contributed to a multi-stage mixed-method study on referral systems and gatekeeping policies, creating tools such as cross-sectional surveys and guidelines for qualitative investigations.

Beyond the office, Cain joined a field trip to Siem Reap, witnessing first-hand the challenges and opportunities in rural healthcare delivery. Visiting health centers and the awe-inspiring Angkor Wat provided valuable insights into Cambodia’s healthcare landscape.

Cain observed how resource constraints can hinder public health work but found inspiration in the dedication and passion of NIPH colleagues to improve health outcomes in Cambodia.

Jimmy Hung, another fourth-year GHD student, is currently on placement at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) - Strategic and Policy Unit in São Tomé and Príncipe.

In the past two months, our BASc(GHD) student, Jimmy, had the precious opportunity to work as a fellow in the Health Team of the UNDP in São Tomé and Príncipe.

This picturesque island nation is known for its rich volcanic soil, beautiful rainforests, and scenic beaches. However, like many island countries, it faces challenges due to climate change and extreme weather.

Jimmy gained first-hand experience in supporting the Ministry of Health with two critical projects: the Digitalization of a Health Information System and the construction of medical laboratories and warehouses. These efforts are vital for improving the healthcare infrastructure and ensuring reliable medical records and services.

A special quote from Jimmy's feedback: "Throughout this journey, I can always discover something interesting and understand more about this country. Most importantly, I have adapted to the new lifestyle here called leve leve (a light and relaxed attitude to life)."

The theme "杏福健康站 - Healthy Living, Healthy Ageing" resonated with the residents and brought the community together for an insightful and fun event.

Skyler Khaw, a fourth-year GHD student, is currently on placement at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Headquarters in Geneva.

During this internship, Skyler has the opportunity to work alongside some of the brightest minds in global health, gaining invaluable insights into projects focused on critical issues such as mental health, non-communicable diseases, climate change, and social inclusivity. This experience is helping him refine his interests and strengths, paving the way for a future career dedicated to making a positive impact on global health and development.

Skyler also shared his aspirations for the future:

“I plan to continue contributing to global health and development, focusing on one or two areas where I can specialise, such as climate change and social inclusivity. I am grateful that my work at the IFRC exposes me to a wide array of projects and programmes. For instance, I have been involved with initiatives related to mental health, non-communicable diseases, and climate change. My goal is to deepen my understanding of my interests and strengths, allowing me to narrow down the specific aspects of global health and development I wish to pursue. This journey began with my ambition and desire to make the world a better place, which ultimately led me to study in the GHD Programme.”

Gabriel Sung, a fourth-year GHD student, is currently on placement at the Rizzoli Orthopaedics Institute in Italy, where they are conducting an important study on the genomics relating proteins to osteoarthritis. This research has the potential to significantly enhance our understanding of this common non-communicable disease affecting millions around the globe.

Gabriel shared with us photos of her workplace and with the sculpture of Signor Codivilla, an Italian surgeon from Bologna, and the namesake of this particular building within the Rizzoli Orthopaedics Institute.

Global Health and Development Summer Programme 2024 Recap

With the enthusiastic participation of nearly 30 passionate high school students, this year's programme was an extraordinary learning experience. Here's a glimpse into what transpired:

Participants gained valuable insights into the interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Global Health and Development [BASc(GHD)] programme. They explored how this unique curriculum empowers students with a comprehensive understanding of global health challenges from diverse perspectives.

The heart of the programme was the engaging simulation activities, where students assumed different roles in a simulated country. They tackled real-world global health issues, making critical decisions and gaining deeper appreciation for the complexities involved.

The programme concluded with a memorable closing ceremony, where participants were honoured for their dedication and hard work. Each student received a certificate of completion, marking their achievements and growth over the two days.

Throughout the programme, students were inspired to continue nurturing their curiosity and passion for global health. Many expressed a keen interest in exploring the BASc(GHD) programme as a pathway to making a positive impact on the world.

Spotlight on the BASc(GHD) Programme at the University of Hong Kong!

Professor Pui Hong Chung, the BASc(GHD) Programme Director, joined two of our talented students, Vincy Yau (2023 graduate) and Zoe Chan (Year 1), for a media interview to showcase the signature features of this degree.

Professor Chung shared that the programme has 20-30 students annually, with approximately one-third being international. The diverse teaching team is composed of faculty members from the US, Australia, and Southeast Asia.

A key highlight is the 6-month placement, where students gain hands-on experience at UN agencies, NGOs, and charitable foundations. Vincy, who interned at UNICEF New York, explained how the programme's interdisciplinary nature equipped her to better collaborate with colleagues from various academic backgrounds.

As a first-year student, Zoe also shared her enriching experience, including opportunities to engage with the wider Faculty of Medicine community through student society activities.

"Now going into my second year as a BASc (GHD) student, I, as a humble recipient of the Belt & Road Scholarship (Myanmar), am truly grateful for the generous and continued support by the university and scholarship donors. In my quest to pursue a career in the health sector on an international scale, this scholarship played a significant role in enabling me to pursue my higher education as non-local student studying at HKU and opening up a world of opportunities for me.

My goal is to work towards the advancement of health policies and practices on a global scale to address critical development issues and promoting equitable access to healthcare for all, applying new concepts I’ve learnt to personal experiences I’ve faced back at home and learning from different cases all around the world. Additionally, I am also determined to do a second major in Bachelor of Science in Food and Nutritional Science, with a focus on food security studies - a program which I believe will compliment and further enrich my dreams to work with non-governmental organizations and pursuing a master’s degree in Public Health. This advancement towards my goals would not be possible without this scholarship.

With the scholarship, I maximized academic opportunities and engaged with the community. As an executive committee member of the Global Health and Development Society and member of various other societies, I actively participate in and organize extracurricular activities. I also represent Myanmar students at HKU through scholarship sharing sessions, encouraging future students from Myanmar to pursue academic opportunities in Hong Kong. Furthermore, I gained practical skills and community involvement through a summer internship at a local company.

The Belt and Road Scholarship has not only enabled me to extend support and guidance to others but also allows me to focus on my studies and pursue my passions while alleviating the financial burden on my family and for that, I am forever grateful.

The Belt and Road Scholarship programme, which was launched in the 2016-17 academic year, has awarded scholarships to over 430 students from 39 countries. It aims to attract global talent and foster international cooperation. 🌍✈️

The following is the sharing from Harseni, Year 2 BASc(GHD) student from Sri Lanka.

"If someone told me, three years ago, that I would get a scholarship to one of the most prestigious universities in the world, I would not have believed them. Due to financial reasons, going overseas for my undergraduate studies was out of the question for me. Yet here I am today— studying BASc in Global Health and Development at HKU— on the path to improve and foster future healthcare systems and polices. I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for the Belt and Road Scholarship. Not only has it widened my horizons, but it has also pushed me to reach my fullest potential.

The belt and road Scholarship has helped me gain a shift in perspective, both academically and culturally. I have met doctors and visited hospitals in Hong Kong that follow a different health-system to what I grew up in. Each course and opportunity given by the GHD programme opens a window into a new world more complex and dynamic than the last. And doing this along with like-minded peers makes it more valuable. I am looking forward to my placement next year, and to continue learning and growing!

Coming to Hong Kong to do my dream degree has put in a place more far-reaching than what I imagined for myself. This would not have been possible if it weren’t for the Belt and Road Scholarship, and for that I am eternally grateful.

🎉 Last Friday, we were delighted to celebrate the incredible achievements of our Year 4 students at the Post-Placement Presentation! This special event brought together not only our GHD students from all cohorts, but also esteemed teachers, alumni, family, and friends.

The event began with a warm welcome from our Placement Coordinator, Dr Andrew Park, followed by inspiring speeches from Prof. PH Chung, Prof. David Bishai, and Prof. Vivian Lin. The event was filled with joy and excitement as our final-year students took the stage to share their experiences and thoughts during their six-month field placements last year. Our students had the opportunity to work in various international organisations, including but not limited to UNICEF in New York, IFRC in Geneva, China CDC in Beijing and Shanghai, and UNDP in Jakarta and Sao Tome and Principe, located in more than ten cities worldwide. Through their presentations, the students showcased their job duties, unique encounters with new cities and cultures, and the resilience displayed when faced with tough challenges. The Post-Placement Presentation concluded with a prize presentation ceremony that awarded four prize categories: Outstanding Reflective Journal, Outstanding Public Placement Update, Outstanding Placement Presentation and Outstanding Personal Achievement. These awards served as an acknowledgement to those students who have performed outstandingly during their placement.

Mina Ye, a fourth-year GHD student, is currently interning with UNICEF in New York. She will be sharing an overview of her team and the progress she has made during her internship's initial months.

“I work in the Public Partnership Division at UNICEF, specifically on the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) team. Our main role is to identify partnership opportunities and secure funding from both the public and private sectors. PPPs have been used in various countries for some time, but there is currently no clear and comprehensive approach to planning these projects, making evaluation and scaling difficult. There is also a lack of specialized expertise in this area.
UNICEF is a leading advocate for PPPs and our team focuses on promoting and expanding these projects in both sectors. One of our ongoing projects is the development of a PPP strategy to identify new opportunities. We conducted research and case studies on PPPs within UN organizations, international financial institutions, and bilateral countries. We found that different organizations have their own definitions and strategies for PPPs. We also created a matrix to show which agencies prefer certain types of PPPs. This allows us to target specific agencies when seeking donors and collaborators.
Working at UNICEF NYHQ is intense, especially in September when high-level meetings and events take place. Colleagues from Geneva also come to New York during this time. I had the opportunity to volunteer at the UNICEF Executive Board Meeting and assist the Office of the Executive Director coordination team. This gave me valuable insights into the workings of the board meeting and bilateral events. I also attended large-scale events during the UNGA and had the chance to meet important individuals and world leaders. Additionally, I volunteered at the SDG Digital event organized by UNDP and ITU, which aimed to leverage digital technologies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.”

Being a fourth-year student majoring in GHD, Jiahui writes about her valuable experience and reflections.

It was an incredible experience working with these amazing and talented people. Because I am a freshman and have never worked, I thought internships would be boring like organise files and make coffee for everyone. Instead, the team helped me develop my ideas and taught me a lot. I come up with strange ideas all the time, and my colleagues sometimes agree. They accept them when they believe they are reasonable and doable. It's something I did not expect.

It was a special opportunity for me to travel with them on a field trip to determine the future project locations and partners. We visited three sites, eight cities, eleven potential organizations, and visited seven families who will be the beneficiaries.

Although interdisciplinary approaches are being used to motivate and persuade patients to seek treatment in hospitals, most patients and families are still unaware of the benefits of treating their eyes and restoring their sight. Government insurance policies do not provide enough support for cataract patients. It is therefore important to foster a supportive environment for eye health. On one hand, we need to educate and educate locals about eye health issues. Alternatively, we can create a much larger economic benefit by proving to the government that investing a small amount in cataract treatment is economically efficient, not just for the family but for the entire country and county.

This field trip was an honor for me, and all the work that we have been doing at the site, before and after the trip, has given me great insight into non-governmental organizations. Moreover, I understand how our work truly benefits disadvantaged populations.

Despite the fact that I was an intern who could do nothing, they accepted me for my sometimes unrealistic ideas and helped me make those ideas approachable. I am grateful for their insights, and I am honored to have worked with this group.

Jamie is a year 4 student doing his placement with UNICEF in New York, he had the privilege to attend the SDG Action Weekend at UN HQ in New York and see Natalie Portman in person!

Last weekend, I attended the United Nations Headquarters' SDG Action Weekend. Over the course of two days, high-level stakeholders from across different countries and sectors came together to promote frameworks, initiatives, and strategies to bring the Sustainable Development Goals back on track for 2030. Two days of the event were held. On the first day, Mobilization Day, all stakeholders will gather and mobilize for the SDG Summit. On Acceleration Day, UN High-Impact Initiatives will be discussed. To create high impact and influential frameworks for SDGs, these initiatives all involve high level decision makers.

I attended the Local2030 Coalition session, which featured panelists committed to achieving SDGs locally. By bringing together leaders, this event aims to leverage resources and finance local-level initiatives aimed at assisting local governments and agencies with funding their localized activities. A speaker that stood out to me was Claudia López Hernández, the first female and openly LGBT mayor of Bogotá, Colombia. She stressed the importance of putting local women in proper social situations. Half the country's population is out of the workforce due to gender inequality, which significantly hurts the chance of achieving the SDGs by 2030. The current governor of Hawaii, Joshua Green, was also a panelist. With the recent Maui wildfire as context, he stressed the urgent need for communities that become more vulnerable to extreme weather events to build resilience.

At the end of the event, closing remarks were given by the inspiring Deputy Secretary General of UN, Amina J. Mohammed. She summarized the event and side-events and all the other 12 High Impact Initiatives that took place during the weekend. One quote by her really stuck with me, stating that “We cannot wait until crisis are done to start development”. She urges leaders and decision-makers to start picking up the pace if we want to meet the SDGs in the coming seven years.
